Every day 6 families around Australia will sit in a doctor's office and be told their child has a life-threatening medical condition.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants children with life-threatening medical conditions wishes, that not only helps reignite a sense of hope and imagination, but give children strength to battle their illness.
The local Make-A-Wish branch supports families from across the central west, including Dubbo, Parkes Walgett and beyond.
The fundraising cocktail night , which was held at the Dubbo Turf Club on Saturday, October 14, was a “huge success” according to committee member Amanda Carnegie, with over 100 people attending.
“We received a tremendous amount of local support.. with local businesses making donations,” she said.
The money raised on the night will go back to the Make-A-Wish Foundation who will distribute the funds to each child’s wish. Based in Dubbo, the local Make-A-Wish branch is the only one of its kind in the central west. Ms Carnegie said the night was terrific.
“We had local artist Haleigh Hing give up his time studying for the HSC to come down and play for free,” she said.
“I personally think he made the night, he was so fantastic.”
Another person who was so terrific on the night was teacher Mark Barnes, who was the emcee, Ms Carnegie said .
“Between he and Haleigh they were just so terrific,” she said.
The money was raised through a hundred club and raffles, which included a two person trip to Vanuatu and various other prizes.
This was the first time the local MakeA-Wish branch has held a cocktail night, with other fundraising events including high teas, but Ms Carnegie is hopeful a future event can be held.
“It just really meant a lot for local businesses to support the event,” she said.
“I’m new to Dubbo, so it’s nice to see, especially with so many other things going on, that so many people are willing to donate and support.”
