The powerhouse side, undefeated premiers in the 2017 Dubbo and District Football Association under 17s competition, earned entry into the statewide Champion of Champions tournament due to that triumph and is now one win away from the ultimate prize.
After a thrilling shootout win over AC United at home earlier this month, the Wanderers downed Baulkham Hills at Valentine Park, the home of NSW Football, in last weekend’s semi.
That stunning win, achieved without any substitutes on the bench, set up a grand final with Cherrybrook this weekend.
The high profile match is an incredible achievement for the Wanderers outfit but making it more special is the fact it will be final game the side plays together.
Many of the players have been together since the under 8s and coach Scott Watmore believes this weekend’s decider is the perfect way to cap off their junior careers.
“It's their last game to play together as a team forever,” he said, adding the semi-final performance was the best he’d seen from his side.
The Hurricanes’ defensive effort set the tone for Saturday’s 4-2 win over Baulkham Hills.
The back line of Bailey McCabe, Liam Wherritt, Tyler Rankmore and Nathan Hawke became a brick wall and that allowed the side’s creative players to shine.
The likes of Billy Munn and Tyler Edwards, Logan Watmore, Will Grant and Hamish Grant were all at the peak of their powers and helped the Hurricanes to a 3-1 half time lead.
Despite the Dubbo side tiring, due to the lack of subs, they hung on for a 4-2 win.
“We lost the final 15 or 18 minutes because we had no bench and we were lucky we played so well for the first 60 otherwise I don’t think we would have won,” Watmore said.
“But with no reserves, and three of the boys currently doing their HSC, it was a massive effort.
“There’s one boy from Nyngan and another from Narromine so it’s enormous effort from all of them to get where they have.
“We’ve played Champion of Champions before but never really got past the first or second round so to win would be massive.”
With the grand final against Cherrybrook to again be played on synthetic turf, Watmore is expecting a fast match and also a physical one.
“We’ve got to be strong on the ball,” the coach said.
“Our speed won us the game last weekend so that could be a factor again but in saying that our defence was outstanding (in the semi-final) so if the defence can hold them out then our attack will do the job.”
The grand final kicks off at 1pm on Sunday at Valentine Park during a gala day of Champion of Champions finals from under 12s right through to over 45s.
No side from Dubbo has ever won a Champion of Champions under 17s crown in the tournament’s 44-year history.
Watmore was keen to thank both the Amaroo Hotel and Sainsbury Automotive for their support and help in getting the Hurricanes as far as they have this season.
