The items were donated by Sydney based children’s charity Dandelion Support Network and were flown in by flight charity organisation Little Wings.

Dandelion Support Network was established by two Sydney mothers who noticed an opportunity to make a difference.

The volunteers accept, sort and safety check children’s clothes and nursery items for families in need, through hospitals and support agencies. 

After putting the call out to help Dubbo’s Uniting Western Family Referral Service about 12 months ago, the team at Dandelion Support Network thought the idea seemed simple enough.

But the challenge the Dandelion team faced was logistical.

How could they transport bundles of donated children and family items to Dubbo for distribution to regional families in need?

Enter Little Wings, a not-for-profit flight service that transport terminally ill children to hospital for doctors appointments and treatment.

The joint venture meant that the volunteer group from Dandelion could send 20 kilograms of pre-loved children’s goods to Dubbo on Thursday.

Those goods will now be distributed to Uniting’s many referral services.

Uniting Western Family Referral Service covers 52 per cent of the state and help hundreds of clients in Dubbo, Orange, Bourke and Broken Hill and everywhere in between.

Many of the people they help are often times fleeing domestic violence, Leanne Thuell, from Dubbo’s Uniting Western Family Referral Service said.

“We deal with a lot of young women who sometimes haven’t got anything. So all of that stuff is going to be so beneficial,” she said.

Dubbo’s Uniting Western Family Referral Service, Amy Cubby said as they are not a case management service, they deal with clients on a short-term basis.

“We deal with families who are most vulnerable at that one point.. they’re in crisis. So it’s good that we can have those items to give them then and there,” she said.

As well as doing regional flights within New South Wales for sick children, usually terminally ill, Little Wings provide on-ground transportation for patients and their families to and from the airport and hospitals.

Little Wings business development manager Claudia Steiner said the whole concept of Little Wings was keeping families together and peace of mind for parents.

“Flying with a normal airline sick children can be exposed to many people, so really it;’s all about having that additional safety environment for the patient, which gives peace of mind for parents,” she said.

“Little Wings is really safe transport focused."

The charity flight, which is mainly volunteers based, relies heavily on fundraisers and Ms Steiner said Dubbo was one of the strongest supporters.

“We have 12 patients in Dubbo.. and the local support here is incredible,” she said.

Little Wings have provided transportation to Dubbo’s Grace Sharp and her family.

Grace is only a toddler and was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
