Young female cricketers in Dubbo and the surrounding area now have a competition all of their own after a Thunder Girls Cricket League was confirmed for October.

Dubbo and District Junior Cricket Association has been successful in its application for funding to launch a Thunder league locally.
It marks a huge moment for young players, who can now play in a cricket competition with other girls.
The Dubbo Thunder Girls Cricket League will be for girls aged 10-14 and will be played at Jubilee Oval on Wheelers Lane from Wednesday, October 18.
Michelle Goszko, the Female Participation Specialist for Cricket NSW and someone, has been to Dubbo in the past to cast her eye over younger female players. She was thrilled by the news girls in Dubbo will have an opportunity to play in a competition with their peers.
“When I was growing up, my heroes were David Boon and Allan Border. Girls these days have some great female role models excelling in the game that they can aspire to be like,” she said.
“With the rise in prominence of the WBBL last summer and the continued success of the Australian Women’s Cricket team, the pathway has become clear for young girls aspiring to play at the highest level.”
Cricket NSW Game Development Manager for Far West Matt Ellis has been encouraged by the response so far from girls who have participated in MILO T20 Blast School Gala Days.
“It has been excellent to see first-hand just how much fun girls are having playing cricket when I have been out visiting schools and running MILO T20 Blast School Cup Days.”
“To have a Thunder Girls Cricket League starting in Dubbo this year provides an excellent opportunity for local girls to be active and have fun with their friends whilst developing a passion for cricket.”
The first day of the competition is set to be a season launch before matches begin from week two.
As well as having the chance to play matches, the players will also have access to coaching through a number of volunteers and coaches who are set to be on hand.
The Thunder Girls Cricket League is open to any interested female player, regardless of skill level of experience.
Ellis confirmed any new players “won’t be thrown in the deep end”, with every young cricketer set to be given the chance to develop their skills.
