Sing, a representative level rugby league payer before making the switch to the Roos, was a star for the Dubbo club this season and piled on a huge 29 tries in the regular season.
Those efforts were recognised on Friday when he collected one of the club’s major awards at a gala night at Dubbo Turf Club, where former Wallabies player Adam Freier was guest speaker.
“It was a big achievement to come across and play the code for the first time and do what he did,” Kangaroos president Graeme Board said of Sing.
“I was really impressed with him.”
Youngster Remus Watson and stalwart Ned Williams were other big winners on the night, receiving the prestigious Harry Roberts and Peter Davis trophies respectively.
The Harry Roberts Trophy, given to Watson, is for dedication to the club while the Peter Davis honour is awarded to a player who displayed all the qualities Davis did on the field.
“Those two boys tried hard all year and they’ve been like that for a number of years,” Board said.
“Another good one was Clubperson of the Year which went to Johnny Josephs. If you ever need someone to drive the bus, fill water bottles or jump behind the bar he’s always been the man.”
Brad Pugh, another Roos regular, collected the Most Dedicated Player award while colt Hamish Smith, who became a first grade regular by the end of the year, was named Rookie of the Year and Doug and Hillary Gray earned the Supporter of the Year prize.
Sing, James Cleaver, Gerald Webster and Michael Bartimote won the best and fairest awards for firsts, seconds, thirds and colts respectively.
As always, the novelty awards handed out were some of the popular of the night.
“We didn’t get a premiership but you can’t win them all the team and I thought the club performed well,” Board said of the season as a whole.
