The SYO is returning to its regional hub to conduct the Central West Strings Camp at Macquarie Conservatorium and Western Plains Cultural Centre from Monday to Wednesday.
The camp, for all ages and abilities, is part of the 2017 SYO State Central West program that seeks to identify and nurture talented young musicians while establishing stronger relationships with communities.
The SYO reports of well-established programs in the region for brass, woodwind and percussionists to perform in big bands and brass bands. “But young string players have very few opportunities to connect and play alongside other string players,” a SYO spokeswoman said.
The three-day visit to Dubbo will include multiple performances by the emerging artists, musicians from the SYO’s flagship ensemble the Sydney Youth Orchestra.
Tuesday will be a busy day for the emerging artists with three performances scheduled. The young musicians and their instruments will be at Western Plains Cultural Centre at 10am, the rotunda in Church Street at 11am and St Brigid’s Church at 2pm.
On Wednesday the up-and-coming performers aged 18 to 24 years will return to the rotunda at 9am. “Our emerging artists will also present chamber music performances and tutorials at the Central West Strings Camp to inspire young regional musicians and demonstrate to them what dedication and practise can achieve,” the SYO spokeswoman said. “..the SYO emerging artists can connect with young regional musicians and offer them a stepping stone into the world of professional music-making.”
The spokeswoman said a highlight of the SYO’s third visit would be a 2pm performance at St Brigid’s Church on Wednesday. “Central West string players will be given the opportunity to play alongside our emerging artists, where they will be able to develop their playing skills surrounded by like-minded, passionate, young string players,” she said. Tickets will be available at the door.
The SYO State Central West program is supported by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, the Greatorex Foundation and Create NSW.
