Playing into a strong wind in the first half, but enjoying the bulk of the possession during that period, the Terriers opened the scoring in the sixth minute. After sustained pressure the ball was moved wide and second rower Brent Warwicker went over, with Brad James adding the extras.
By the 20 minute mark they were enjoying a 16-0 lead after tries to lock Steven Hardy and half James Morrison. But the Magpies began to get a small degree of meaningful possession and with six minutes left in the half fullback Bryce Daniels was able to pounce on a well-weighted grubber kick.
Bryce Daniels converted his own try to bring make it 16-6 at the break. They may have regretted their lack of use of the breeze, but the Magpies would have been pleased to be in the game given their limited possession.
The Terriers opened the scoring again in the second half when Steve Haney crashed over after two minutes, to give Gulgong a 22-6 lead.
The two sides traded tries for the remainder of the game with Baradine’s Travis Houghton, Gulgong front rower Ash Sharpe, and Baradine second rower Anthony Harris all claiming four-pointers.
Gulgong’s Blake Gorrie made the score 32-16 when he barged over in the corner but it was game back on with six to go when Magpie hooker Kyle Head burrowed through to bring the game back to a 12-point margin
Baradine began to throw the ball around and were making good inroads into the Gulgong defence, but on a number of occasions the final pass went astray and in fact it was to be the Terriers who completed the scoring for the afternoon when Brad James scored a converted try after the hooter had sounded to make the final score 38-20.
The Baradine club did not go home entirely empty-handed after their Youth League team downed the Gilgandra Panthers 34-26 in a free-flowing game. Half Lane Hawkins, fullback Brayden Doolan and lock Brandon Worrell all had outstanding games.
The Coonamble Bearettes bowed out of the league tag competition when they went down to the Gilgandra Pink Panthers 18-12 in a very entertaining encounter.
It seemed the game may well have been heading towards golden point extra time as the Bearettes threw everything at the Panthers in the final stages but, despite having a player in the bin for the final eight minutes, the Pink Panthers were able to scramble in defence and managed to hold the red and blacks out.
Next Saturday will see the major semi finals played at Gilgandra with three top class encounters anticipated.
