One of the most rewarding parts of travelling is collecting memories that last a lifetime.
From experiencing the wonder of a towering urgent waterfall, to feeling small as you stare across the vastness of an empty landscape, there’s a moment of appreciation as you soak in the unforgettable experience.
But there are plenty of travel experiences where you can bring something other than memories home with you.
The Northern Territory is bursting with unique tours and workshops that leave you with a little token of reward to remind you for years to come. Here is a round-up of three of the best.
Fossicking for gems in the Gemtree in Alice Springs
A small area of arid land located about 130 kilometres north east of Alice Springs is famed for being one of the best places to find gemstones in Australia.
Despite the dusty barren sand of the desert landscape, the area is teeming with sparkling gemstones just beneath the surface, waiting to be found.
Head out on a fossicking tour on the gemfields and pan for zircons, aquamarine and garnets led by an experienced guide who shows you how and where to fossick successfully.
Attendees also receive an appraisal of their loot of stones upon their return. The Gemtree store also has a gem cutter and jeweller on hand.

Dot painting workshop at Uluru
Try your hand at creating some traditional aboriginal art at Maruku’s traditional dot painting workshop, lead by a local Anangu artist (and an assisting interpreter).
Anangu paintings are created for educational and ceremonial purposes as well as telling of events that have occurred, including different symbols depicting Creation Time (Tjukurpa) stories.
Attendees learn all about the traditional art, symbols and tools of this stunning genre of fine art, drawing inspiration from the landscape of the Northern Territory around them.
Budding artists can apply this shared knowledge in creating their own dot painting, which they can take home to keep after the workshop.

Eat bush-tucker beneath the stars in Katherine
Head along to the unique outback dining experience in Katherine known as Marksie’s Stockman’s Camp Tucker Night.
Set in the tranquil surrounds of the Top Didj grounds, attendees dine by a camp fire of a traditional Territory stock camp and enjoy a three course meal showcasing the tastiest culinary delights of the Red Centre.
Dine on menu offerings including lamb cooked with bush herbs and spices, coal roasted vegetables, tomato and onion pie and wild minted peas while being entertained by the zany and outlandish stories of Marksie himself.
A variety of aboriginal herbs, spices, fruit and food is used in each menu, and jars of the herbs and spices including ground bush tomato and lemon myrtle native pepper seasoning are available for purchase at the campsite.
