It is believed the bird had been trapped over the weekend or longer. People heading to work on Monday morning saw it and called RSPCA, who contacted the Dubbo Rescue Squad.
“We got a call from the RSPCA to saw there was a magpie caught by metal rope on the Commonwealth building on Wingewarra Street, above the old Centrelink site,” Dubbo Rescue Squad deputy captain Neil Sturrock said.
“We got there and untangled him and took him to Duncan McGinness Veterinary Surgeon for treatment. It seemed like he’d been there for quite some time.”
Unfortunately there was no happy ending to the rescue story.
The bird had been caught in the wire for a substantial amount of time, and the vets were unable to remove the wire from around the bird’s neck, so it had to be euthanised.
