From Tuesday to Thursday Year 11 students from Dubbo and places farther afield like Bathurst and Nyngan took part in the Evolution of the Australian Biota workshops.
The workshops were conducted by senior education officer Rebecca Neilsen from the zoo alongside Botanic Gardens and Centennial Parklands’ Karen Ariyan and Karen Player from the Australian Museum.
Ms Neilsen said the activities were designed to directly tie in with the HSC biology syllabus.
“It was really a lot of hands-on activities they wouldn’t get in the classroom and because we had the Botanic Gardens and the Australian Museum there as well it was something that kids from western areas don’t usually get to do as well,” Ms Neilsen said.
While Taronga Western Plains Zoo provided the living animals, Ms Neilsen said the other organisations brought fossils for the students to study.
The workshops have been held for the past 15 years.
