Fast-forward to Monday and the Dubbo product was formally announced as a Knights player for the next three seasons.
It had long been expected Watson would be announced as a Knights recruit, rumours regarding his future been swirling for some time, but the 30-game NRL player will now move to the Hunter next season after the Roosters allowed him out of the final year of his contract.
Twenty-one-year-old Watson was named the Auckland Nines’ Player of the Tournament this year and also represented Country in the City Country Origin match played at Mudgee’ Glen Willow Sports Complex.
“Connor is an exciting young talent who has plenty of great football ahead of him,” Newcastle Knights chief executive officer Matt Gidley said.
“There is no doubt Connor will grow with our team and be a great addition to the club.”
Watson joins Kalyn Ponga, Tautau Moga and Aidan Guerra at Newcastle, as well as Shaun Kenny-Dowall, who made his debut against the Roosters after a long stint at the Bondi club.
Watson’s versatility and ability to break open a game is expected to be highly-valued at a Newcastle side which has struggled to break down teams on so many occasion this season.
“It has been pleasing to announce a number of signings for next season, as we continue to build our squad with a mix of local juniors, emerging talent and experience,” Gidley said.
