Westside were hoping to score their win of the season and and that motivation saw them go with the hosts for almost an hour of the game.
It was 24-all at half-time but the Cowboys started to edge ahead in the second half and a try in the final minutes gave them a 14-point buffer.
The win keeps their finals chances alive and pressure on Macquarie
They entered the round in sixth place on four points, three behind the Raiders but closed the margin to just one after Macquarie lost to Forbes.
Wellington will finish their season with games against Narromine, CYMS, Macquarie and Parkes. The match against Macquarie could be the crucial one that will determine who finishes in fifth.
Narromine’s chances of playing finals football are getting slimmer, despite some very competitive performances in recent weeks.
They had a close 26-16 loss to Nyngan at Larkin Oval, but they are now two points behind Wellington and three behind Macquarie.
They have a more favourable run home, starting with their match against the Cowboys, followed by Forbes, Westside and Macquarie.
They would need to win three of those games to give themselves any chance of making the play-offs.
Nyngan’s win against the Jets moves them into second place on the Group 11 ladder late in the season.
