LAND NEGOTIATION PROGRAM
The NSW Government is calling for interested local governments and local Aboriginal Land Councils to join the next phase of the Land Negotiation Program. We are looking to enter into additional voluntary negotiations following the introduction of the program last year. These negotiations mean Aboriginal Land Councils and local governments can sit down with the NSW Government and consider land claims in a more efficient and strategic way.
These negotiations are intended to provide more certainty around land that holds cultural, spiritual or economic significance to indigenous communities. There will be an opportunity for local indigenous communities and local governments to have a direct say in the management of land that is not already classified as State-significant. I encourage all local governments and Aboriginal land councils interested to take part in this voluntary program, which aims to deliver better management of Crown land for the benefit of the entire community. EOIs close 5pm Friday August 18.

NARRABRI AIRPORT
I was pleased to be in attendance at the recent Narrabri Shire Council event announcing Fly Corporate is to commence Sydney to Narrabri flights in September. This announcement comes after a sustained effort by Council to secure flights to Sydney for Narrabri Shire and its regional residents.
Fly Corporate operate the current Brisbane - Narrabri flight and a Sydney flight adds to their local offerings. Fly Corporate have provided a great quality service to Brisbane, the Narrabri Shire and regional residents have shown their confidence in that service, which has resulted in the expansion and announcement of the new service to Sydney.
NEW BIOSECURITY ACT
Recently the State’s new biosecurity reforms were switched on as the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015 commences. The new Act will replace 14 outdated Acts with a modern, cohesive framework for protecting the State from the threat of animal, plant, pests, diseases, weeds and contaminants. I encourage everyone in Barwon – from recreational fishers to rural landholders across the electorate – to make sure they’re aware of their general biosecurity duties under the new legislation. The community has an important role to play in managing biosecurity, particularly as a source of information.
The new framework is a smarter way of managing biosecurity risks through risk monitoring and flexible management tools, emergency response powers and community education. 11 Regional Strategic Weed Management Plans developed by Local Land Services and Local Control Authorities in conjunction with Regional Weed Committees were also activated. To support the reform and regional plans, DPI has developed the WeedWise app – an educative tool providing landholders with information on treating and managing weeds.
