Dubbo South Public School has emerged as a hotspot for refusing, reducing, reusing and recycling enthusiasm in recent weeks.
The wave of change has been led by music teacher Alexandra Prince, who was moved by the recent War on Waste series on ABC.
“I had my own wake-up call the morning after watching the first episode when I was packing my own children’s lunch boxes and realised I had used so many little plastic bags,” she said.
In the past three weeks stages one, two and three viewed the War on Waste series, which prompted discussion and research. Mrs Prince said a number of actions had been taken and the students were fascinated by the recycling process.
Reusable coffee cups are being spotted and the canteen is looking into switching from plastic straws to paper.
Mrs Prince reported that many soft plastics that can’t go in the city’s kerbside recycling service can be recycled at special bins at Coles and all three Woolworths stores at Dubbo.
“I hope Dubbo people get behind it, because I think we can make a huge difference,” Mrs Prince said.
