Supporters of Dubbo College turned out loud and enthusiastic as play began on the opening day of competition on Wednesday.
They were carrying on a decades-old tradition that is shared with cup opponents Orange and Bathurst high schools.
Astley Cup participants from early eras were keen for updates and some former students lent their support at Wednesday’s tennis, netball, basketball and athletics matches.
Dubbo product Krystal Dallinger, now a student of Hunter Sports High School, was at the netball match.
“I love seeing everyone from school, all my friends, I love supporting Dubbo,” she said.
“It [the atmosphere] is amazing, it’s always so uplifting, it’s awesome.”
Dubbo College Senior Campus PDHPE teacher Kieran Smith has been part of Astley Cup campaigns for more than a decade.
He had caught up with some former students, and said it was a special competition.
“It’s a community thing, it’s not just our school,” he said.
“People from Dubbo get involved.
“The same thing happens at Orange and Bathurst.
“It gets the community together, it gets people who might have played Astley Cup when they went to school or their parents played, everyone takes an interest.
“Driving down the street, people are asking how Astley Cup’s going today.
“Having people from the community come and watch the events and support the kids is really great too.”
