Dubbo is becoming more culturally diverse according to the latest census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, but it is starting from a low point.

There has been a 4.5 per cent increase in the number of residents who were born overseas since the previous census in 2011.
However the city still lags well below the national average when it comes to cultural diversity, with the overwhelming majority of the city’s residents born in Australia, as were both of their parents, and the majority also identify as having an Australian heritage.
When it comes to country of birth, 84.5 per cent of residents in the 2830 postcode were born in Australia, compared to 66.7 percent nationwide. Although at the 2011 census, 89.5 per cent were born in Australia.
One per cent of Dubbo’s population, or 381 residents, were born in England, with 355 born in India, 293 in New Zelaand and 203 in Nepal.
When it came to parents’ place of birth, 76.8 per cent of Dubbo residents said both of their parents were born in Australia with just 9.2 per cent indicating both were born overseas. It compares to 47.3 per cent nationwide who had both parents born in Australia and 34.4 per cent who said both parents were born overseas.
Even when it came to ancestry, 35.5 per cent of Dubbo said their ancestry was Australian, with 29.1 per cent identifying as having English ancestry.
Those results also translated to languages spoken within the household, with just 6.8 per cent of Dubbo households speaking a language other than English.
Nepali was the most common, with .5 per cent speaking Nepali, .4 per cent speaking Mandarin and 0.3 per cent speaking Malayam, Tagalog and Sinhalese.
When it came to home ownership, 28.9 per cent of people own their home outright, with 34.3 per cent having a mortgage and 32.7 per cent renting.
A total of 70.9 per cent of Dubbo households are made up of a family, with one quarter or 25.8 per cent, made up of a single resident.
An area where Dubbo does lag behind is internet connections. 77.7 per cent of households access the internet from thei house, either via a computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet or gaming device. 19.5 per cent of households have no connection.
Nationally 83.2 per cent or respondents access the internet from their house, while just 14.1 per cent have no access.
