Dubbo College’s first tie for 2017 starts on Thursday at Orange, with tennis, both boys and girls soccer, athletics and the Mulvey Cup debate on the agenda.
Rugby league, one of Dubbo’s great strengths and points of pride in recent years, kicks off on Friday morning but despite his side being stacked with Western Rams players, May doesn’t expect an easy task.
“The Astley Cup rugby league is as even as it can be,” he said.
“Last year against Bathurst it was one of the most competitive games you’ll see and Orange had a bit of a younger side then so they’ll be strong. It presents a challenge.
“Rugby league is one of the sports we’ve done well in and we want to continue doing that.”
NSW Country player Luke Gale will lead the side while fellow Western Ram and Group 11 first grader Clayton Couley partners him in a powerhouse second row.
Western Rams under 16s players Aidan Lake, James ‘Busta’ Nelson and Colby Peckham are also in the side while Jai Merritt is expected to be key in the halves.
The rugby league match is played at 11.30am on Friday.
Orange High School heads into the match having gone down to Bathurst 30-20 last week, despite leading in the final minutes.
