The margin may have been a convincing 10 shots in the final match but there was no doubt about the closeness and competitiveness of the matches during the long weekend’s Jack Nolan Triples at Dubbo City Bowling Club.

In a bumper 2017 edition of the annual tournament, former New Zealand international Kevin Robinson teamed up with Heath McGuire and City’s own Richard Clarke to claim victory.
There win was a special one for all involved, particularly Clarke on his home greens, but it Robinson was keen to praise the effort of all involved in what was just his second competition at Dubbo.
“It’s great. I haven’t been to this club before and I’d only been to Dubbo once so to come away with a win is brilliant and we’re very happy,” he said.
“The boys played well and I helped out now and again, it was a team effort.”
In Monday’s final day of competition,Robinson, McGuire and Clarke came up against the defending champions in Max Lowe, Nathan Collis and Josh Andriske.
The match see-sawed but Robinson and his side had the advantage late on, but only just.
But then the experience of the former international shone through, though he claims luck had a fair bit to do with it as he turned a close contest into a resounding lead for his side with one bowl.
“It was good . It was tight and we got lucky on that 20th end,” he said.
“It was maybe one or two the difference and we were ahead and I was lucky enough to turn that bowl on the jack, I didn’t mean to, but it went from us being one or two in front we were six so that made it reasonably safe.”
Lowe, Collis and Andriske were forced to chase shots late on in the hope of a miraculous win but it wasn’t to be as a packed City saw a new team finish as champions.
“It can be a long time between drinks in this game, you don’t win out of turn so it was good,” Robinson said.
The event was again a huge success for City, with healthy numbers on the greens and a host of players staying right until the end to see how the competition unfolded.
Robinson, someone with a mountain of experience in the game, had nothing but praise for the club and it’s biggest event of the year.
“We enjoy a good time, had a few beers and everyone had a good time. The club looks after you so well here, they do everything for you. It’s unbelievable,” he said.
“That’s what it’s all about. You spend all day out in the sun so you’ve got to enjoy it otherwise there’s no point being there.”
The winning trio finished with the bulk of the $8,000 prizemoney while there was a host of other awards handed out during the three days.
