Police raided Tarek Assaad's home in November, weeks after his younger brother Hamad was shot dead in the driveway of his Georges Hall home.

Assaad, 32, lived a few doors down from his 29-year-old brother and turned up minutes after the shooting on October 25 to find him lying in a pool of blood.

In a bid to curb retaliation to the crime figure's murder, police rolled out a string of firearm prohibition order (FPO) searches.

On the night of November 17, Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad (MEOCS) detectives banged on the door of Assaad's Sturt Avenue home.

A raid uncovered a handgun with a loaded magazine in a TV cabinet drawer, another magazine in a bedroom and a single bullet on a bedside table.

After pleading guilty to weapon possession offences, Assaad faced Burwood Local Court on Tuesday.

He clashed with photographers outside court and demanded to know why they were taking his photo, saying: "I wish your brothers die."

It emerged in court Assaad decided to acquire the Glock pistol as he was in fear after his brother was executed.

"He had a mindset of fear for his own safety," his lawyer Elie Rahme told the court.

"Because it was communicated, from a number of sources, to him there was a risk to him after what had occurred."

MEOCS officers poised to serve a FPO on Hamad Assaad on October 25 were sitting outside his house when the daylight shooting occurred.

Assaad acquired the gun and ammunition after a suggestion from a member of his brother's entourage, the court heard.

Mr Rahme asked the magistrate to consider the circumstances surrounding why he had the gun and his early guilty plea.

He had also made moves to "right his brother's wrongs" since his arrest, as documents provided by police showed, the court heard.

Crown prosecutor Katrina Parker acknowledged there were "unique circumstances" as to how Assaad got the gun and the events weeks earlier.

Assaad spent two months in custody after he was charged. Most of that was in protection, where he spent 23 hours a day in his cell away from other inmates.

According to agreed facts tendered in court, Assaad initially told police the Smith and Wesson Glock handgun found in his home actually belonged to his dead brother.

DNA testing suggested otherwise. Assaad's profile was found on the weapon.

The serial number on the unregistered gun had been obliterated but it appeared Assaad received the gun like that.

In a bedroom of Assaad's home, police found a detachable magazine with 14 rounds in it.

In a car parked on the street, detectives found more ammunition in a black backpack.

Mr Rame said Assaad had no history of gun crime, although his brother had taken a "really different path" with firearms.

Police are still trying to hunt down those responsible for shooting Hamad several times as he got into his car to take a young relative to school.

One theory police are investigating is whether Hamad was killed as retribution to his rumoured roll in the brazen shooting of crime figure Wally Ahmad at Bankstown Centro in April, 2016.

His death is one of four fatal shootings police believe may be linked to an ongoing feud between prominent Sydney crime families.

Safwan Charbaji, 32, was shot dead during a messy melee outside Ahmad's smash repairs shop in Condell Park in April 2016.

Ahmad's brother Mahmoud was charged with Charbaji's alleged murder after flying back from Lebanon in March.

Kemel "Blackie" Barakat, the right hand man of Ahmad "Rock" Ahmad, was killed in his Mortlake apartment in early March.

There had been suspicions in the underworld and police circles that Barakat was involved in the Hamad Assaad shooting.

Assaad will be sentenced next week.
