The Dubbo Chamber of Commerce was looking for a new way to launch its prestigious event and chose to link with the Dubbo Turf Club for the historic and memorable meeting.
The Rhino Cup could become a regular launch event for the awards if this year’s pilot event is a success.
Race four at the June 16 meeting of Dubbo Turf Club will be the inaugural Rhino Cup. There are seven other races named after Chamber of Commerce members who chose to come on board.
As well as the action on the track, the Chamber of Commerce has a marquee where the 22nd annual Rhino Awards will be launched.
Chamber president Matt Wright said it was an exciting new way of launching the Rhinos that helped promote the October 13 event.
"We were approached by the turf club to look at a Chamber of Commerce race day and when we looked at dates, this one coincided with when we were going to launch the Rhinos,” he said.
“We had a chat and came up with a plan to launch the Rhinos at the races.”
Dubbo Turf Club general manager Vince Gordon said the event was shaping up to be a good one, with strong nominations expected.
“Both the turf club board and everyone involved with the club wants to be a part of what is happening in the city and the Chamber of Commerce is a big part of that,” he said.
“This is an opportunity for us to not only bring some new sponsors on board for the day but also to show our wares and be part of the community.”
