Medley, in his first match for the season, suffered a serious neck injury during a tackle while playing for CYMS in the match against the Wellington Cowboys.
He was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital where he underwent surgery on Sunday night for damage to his spinal cord and C5 vertebrae. It will still be some time before the extent of the injuries are known but best wishes from the rugby league and wider sporting community have poured in.
“It’s just so sad when something like this happens in a game we all love,” Loxley said. “We can all hope he recovers until we know anymore but we’re hoping and praying and will do anything we can to help, along with Dubbo CYMS.
“This is when people in the bush really band together.”
Medley is well known in sporting circles due to his exploits on the cricket field, where he captains CYMS and also plays on the representative scene, while he has also featured in the lower grades for the Dubbo Kangaroos in recent seasons.
The reserve grade match was abandoned due to the injury, which occurred in the first half.
“The Medleys have been involved with CYMS for a very long time, and as a club we’ll do everything we can to support Ryan, his wife and family … we’re hopeful everything will pan out well,” CYMS chairman Kevin Walkom said on Sunday.
