We are a media outlet essentially calling for media outlets to stop giving Schapelle Corby attention for the wrong reasons.
Whether you believe her story or not, she is a convicted drug smuggler.
Report on her in the sense that it is a news story but how on Earth has she been elevated to celebrity status?
It’s just a matter of time before she sells her story for millions or releases a book.
The Australian public have a fascination with Aussies caught up in a scandal but her release from prison and return to the country was executed like a scene from a James Bond movie.
Flights were changed at the last minute and multiple vans were waiting to act as a decoy as she left the airport.
And this is not a woman who is shying away from attention.
The second she was out of handcuffs, she started an Instagram account and received more than 400,000 followers in a matter of minutes.
Her release was talked about as much for her return to the country as much as it was for the image of missing boy William Tyrrell on her handbag.
Supporters of the Where’s William campaign, who have fought tirelessly to return the little boy since he went missing, even said thanks but no thanks.
The stunts and publicity-seeking acts feels slightly like she’s laughing in our faces.
And we are letting her.
All television stations had rolling coverage of her release on Saturday night as if going through airport security warranted minute-by-minute updates.
Now it becomes a bizarre game of ‘Where’s Schapelle?’ as the media attempt to follow her across Brisbane in the hopes of getting the scoop on where she gets her first cup of coffee.
When what we all really wanted to see was the look on her face when she went through airport security in Bali to come back home.
All eyes are on Schapelle now.
Where will she work?
Who’s she dating?
What has she missed out on over the past 13 years?
There are far bigger issues in the world right now.
They aren’t receiving half as much attention as they should because of this.
Schapelle is home safe and that’s as much as anyone should say about it … for now.
