Well, the time has come yet again and the circumstances are enough to make you cry.

For one local family, an up and down 18-month period has taken another turn for the worst, but they are determined to fight.

It’s only four months since two-year-old Grace Sharp got the all clear after a battle with a metastatic rhabdoid tumour, a rare and aggressive cancer.

Her release home from Westmead Childrens Hospital ended a war that she and her parents Sarah and Keiran had fought since her diagnosis in November 2015.

Sixteen months of complicated surgeries, intensive chemotherapy and radiation had come to an end and she had beaten the cancer, which affected a lung and her kidneys.

At the time Dr Luciano Dalla Pozza, Westmead’s head of Oncology, said he had never seen a case like Grace’s before.

“Grace had a very rare form of cancer and there was no defined best therapy for her,” Dr Dalla Pozza said.

“We weren’t sure what the best treatment was.”

Doctors liaised with overseas specialists and plans were made to develop a tailored treatment plan for the toddler.

And although the outcome of the treatment was very uncertain from the beginning, Grace had beaten the odds.

Unfortunately though, a recent three month check-up delivered the worst news possible.

In a post to fundraising site Gofundme, Grace’s aunt Tash Webb tells the story.

“For those that know us are aware that our gorgeous Grace has already fought a courageous battle against cancer and won,” she wrote.

“However, at her recent three-month scan the unthinkable happened. Keiran and Sarah heard the words that no parent should ever have to... her very rare and aggressive cancer has returned. 

“As I type this Keiran, Sarah and Grace are on their way back to Westmead to start treatment again.

“I want to support Keiran and Sarah so that they can stay by Grace's side every step of the way.”

When I made an enquiry with Sarah about doing this story, her words were “our world is shattered at the moment, but we will try and fight again”.

And it is up to the Dubbo community to assist this young family as they fight a battle they shouldn’t have had to fight in the first place, let alone for a second time.
