It’s not until they strap on the helmet that I start to get nervous. Hearing about the new stunts they had planned, signing the waiver, chatting with the team, was all fine until they fit my helmet.
I was one of the lucky few who got to ride along in Team D-MAX’s performance on Saturday.
The guys are known as Australia’s premier driving team. In their Isuzu D-MAX utes they manage to drift, spin, jump, and drive on two wheels.
Much faster than I anticipated, I’m strapped in and on the track, ready for lead driver Jack Monkhouse to give my driver Declan Dwyer the call over the radio that it’s time to begin.
Some drifting and a spin later, there’s smoke coming from our ute. A turbo has been blown. But, this is show business, and as they say, the show must go on.
Declan tells me we have to move as fast as possible from our ute and into a waiting vehicle. It’s a tense moment as we quickly unbuckle, run and rebuckle into the waiting D-MAX, Declan reminding me that we need to be as fast as possible.
Seamlessly he inserts himself back into the performance and we carry on with the four-way crossovers, figure eights and my favourite spins.
At one point I look out the window and another car goes past on two wheels. At another I don’t realise we’re lining up with two of the other D-MAX’s so a fourth can complete the 12 metre ramp to ramp jump above us.
All too soon, Declan and the rest of the drivers are waving to the crowd as they wrap up another show.
