The possibility of putting speed humps down the street – part of the Mitchell Highway – was discussed at last week’s council meeting.
Councillor Les Lambert asked; “Is it up to council to raise concerns about the pedestrian crossing in the main street?”
“Can we raise the level of the crossing like a speed hump? I saw an 80-year-old lady almost get cleaned up the other day."
Deputy Mayor Dawn Collins echoed his concerns.
She said the crossing has been raised at a traffic management meeting.
Council directors were going to examine options, but were concerned because the Roads and Maritime Services department controls the street.
The Narromine News asked residents for their views on the speed humps on its Facebook page.
Kym Tomlinson Ryan said: “Speed humps only slow down the law abiding and caring that are possibly already going well below the speed limit...others use them as jumps or challenges.”
Stewart McDougall said: “Be better off getting some crossing signals system on the crossing, there’s too many close calls happening lately and direction arrows near the intersection to rail and post office, speed humps won’t slow people down.”
Jenny Jen said: “Something needs to be done about the crossing. The amount of cars that don’t give a rats….and go through. I don’t know how many times my kids and I have almost been hit.”
