The Dubbo Showgirl is chosen each year at the Dubbo Show. They are judged on their personality, confidence, goals, knowledge and presentation.
Ms Ryder is no stranger to the world of shows.
“I helped Armidale get their sheep exhibit back up and running after an eight year break,” she said.
The 23-year-old has judged sheep and cattle before, and will be a carcas judge at the Dubbo Show this year.
The Show Society said the Showgirl Competition aimed to find the person most suited to represent young, regional women of NSW.
The Showgirl is the ‘face of the show’ and assists in obtaining new and diverse contacts for the show, as well as promoting special events.
“I think the Showgirl is someone who is comfortable just being themselves. They get their ideas out there but they’re also open to other ideas,” Ms Ryder said.
“I’m not going to go out there and be someone that I’m not.”
The Showgirl entrant has only lived in Dubbo for about six months, but was excited about the possibility of being chosen to promote the city’s show.
“I had a friend who competed a few years ago and she persuaded me to go along to the information night. Then when I was there the ladies persuaded me to apply for Showgirl,” she said.
The best part about being the Showgirl would be meeting those involved in the Show Society, and connecting with the like-minded people at the zone finals, Ms Ryder said.
Despite the gentle push it took for her to enter, Ms Ryder said she was having no regrets about becoming a Showgirl entrant.
“I wish I’d been involved a little bit earlier, I’m getting to the end of the age range. But I’d really like to encourage young people to get involved,” she said.
She was feeling pretty relaxed about the competition, Ms Ryder said, as were the other entrants she had met.
Ms Ryder is currently working at Fletchers International Exports on a rotating cadetship.
Once it’s completed, she said she would like to stay on at Fletchers, or find a job in the red meat industry.
The 2017 Dubbo Showgirl, as well as this year’s Teenage Showgirl, will be announced during the show on Saturday, May 27.
