Placed seven times but winless after 21 starts, Suman The Yak finally broke through when scoring a convincing win in the Kevin Hunt Builders Maiden Handicap (1400m) at Coonamble on Saturday.
I Am Sparta (Jamie Gibbons, $8) established a big lead but was run down and beaten by more than two lengths by Suman The Yak (Clayton Gallagher, $6.50) with My Christians (Tiffany Jeffries, $13), third.
Owned by Fiona Watts and trained at Dubbo by her partner Justin Stanley, Prattler scored career win number nine in the Colin Wrigley Memorial Benchmark 55 Handicap (1200m).
Prattler (Jean Van Overmeire, $3.20 favourite) set the pace and when challenged in the straight pulled away to score by two lengths from Split The Atom (Jeff Kehoe, $4) and Hay Grazer (Vad Bolozhinskyi, $6.50).
The talented apprentice Van Overmeire was also aboard the Connie Greig, Dubbo trained Felicette ($2.50 favourite) which came from midfield to win the Khan’s Supermarket Class 3 Handicap (1100m) from Gallant Dragon (Mikayla Weir, $31) and Butterfly Flag (Allan Chau, $13).
Cessnock trainer Todd Howlett scored a double on the day and both winners, Hey Billy Boy (Terry Green, $5) and Brobak (Mikayla Weir, $5.50), led all the way in the HJ A Wiakowski Maiden Plate (1200m) and Grays Auto Electrical Class 1 Handicap (1300m) respectively.
Ridden by the promising apprentice Chris Williams, the Rebecca Dunn’s Lady Marmaletta ($4 equal favourite) held off Naoko (Tony Cavallo, $12) to win the XXXX Gold Benchmark 55 Handicap (1600m) by a length with Track Flash (Allan Chau, $4.40) finishing third.
