Denis Walsh, state president of St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, said National Volunteer Week provides the perfect opportunity to thank its members and volunteers.
“The society exists through the contribution of our compassionate members and volunteers. Together, they dedicated over six million hours last year to help others.
“They give up their time to support people experiencing disadvantage across the state and this Week is a fitting time to acknowledge their generosity,” Mr Walsh said.
“There will be celebrations across the state because without our passionate and hardworking members and volunteers we would not have been able to assist over 300,000 people in NSW last year.”
Jack de Groot, chief executive of St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, said the rewards from volunteering are immense and recommends people consider volunteering.
“As they say, Give Happy Live Happy. We run a number of programs involving our volunteers–like working in our shops, in our centres and offices and in programs like Compeer, a friendship program for people living with mental illness. These are just some of the many ways our volunteers make a real difference to people’s lives every day,” he said.
“With busy lives it can sometimes be hard to find time to volunteer, but putting aside a few hours is invaluable to you, your family and those whom you help.
“Your local St Vincent de Paul Society centre is always looking for people to assist in giving others a handup. Volunteering is a great way to connect with your community and forge new friendships and acquire new skills. It provides an opportunity to give back.”
Volunteering Australia says the week is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of the nation’s volunteers.
It says thousands of events across the country will be held to say thank you to the six million Australians who volunteer. Events will include breakfasts, morning/afternoon teas, and luncheons as well as open days, award ceremonies, picnics, forums and training sessions.
