It’s fair to say the Dubbo Demons women’s side has started the 2017 Central West AFL season pretty well.
Due to a far from ideal 2017 draw, the Demons have played the Cowra Blues in the first two matches of the season and the sides will meet again on Saturday during a bumper day of Australian rules action.
The Demons women will start as overwhelming favourites having thumped a new-look Blues side in the opening two matches.
And while the Blues won’t be Dubbo’s most difficult test this season there is no doubt the first two results would have made the likes of competition frontrunners Bathurst Bushrangers and Orange Tigers.
Dubbo finished third on the ladder last season, scoring six wins from 13 matches, but the side is already on target to improve on those results this year.
A number of new recruits has boosted the side with former Sydney Thunder Women’s AFL player Ebony Mackey making an immediate impact while South Australian midfielder Emily Warner has taken to the game immediately and been one of her side’s best both weeks despite having barely played the game before.
Add to that the likes of Trudy Sloane, already the competitions leading goalkicker and the consistent Lauren Hazell and coach Niwa Gotty has the makings of a side ready to make a real impact in 2017.
The side has shown signs of imrpovement as well, kicking 16 goals in a 90-point round one win before booting 19 majors in the round two, 124-point demolition.
The Demons are the only side to reach triple figures this season with Orange’s 100-0 win merely the default score given for a forfeit.
Saturday’s match between Dubbo and Cowra begins at 12.45pm at South Dubbo Oval with the men’s match following at 2.30pm.
