I have said for years now that the Dubbo electorate has been, and continues to be, home to many talented people. We have great sportspeople, painters, writers, poets and musicians. That is why it is important that we identify and support emerging talent. I have decided this week to focus just two talented people in our region recently recognised for achievement in their respective fields. The Mid-Western Regions Jayden Muir who has received a NSW Government $10,000 arts scholarship and Dubbo athletics track star Millie Gooch who has been awarded the NSW Government’s State Representative Award not once, but twice.

STATE REPRESENTATION AWARDS FOR MILLIE GOOCH
The NSW Government’s State Representative Award recognises people who have represented the state of NSW in a competitive field. This prestigious award bearing the signature of the Premier came into effect in 1989 and has recognised many individuals and teams who have represented NSW either nationally or overseas.
I had the pleasure recently to drop into DCL Park in Dubbo just in time to see Millie Gooch run an impressive 200 metres before presenting her with two awards. The first award was for representing NSW at the 2016 School Sport Australia Athletics Championships, the second for her participation in the 2016 School Sport Australia 12 Years and Under Touch Football Championships. Congratulations Millie, keep up the fantastic work, your family, friends, teammates and community are all very proud of you.
Sport and recreation isn’t always about winning, it’s about playing a part in building a stronger, safer, happier and healthier community. Communities and individuals that participate in sport often develop stronger social bonds, and are generally happier and healthier.
$10,000 ARTS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED
A young artist from Budgee Budgee in the beautiful Mid-Western region has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship under a NSW Government initiative to develop emerging artistic talent. Jayden Muir will undertake a mentorship with Alan Flower to write, produce and perform a work for the Sydney Fringe Festival and a tour of the Mid-Western Region. This program helps young regional artists aged between 18 and 25 develop their careers and connect with arts organisations and training opportunities.
Scholarships are available to artists and performers across all art forms including dance, design, digital arts, history, aboriginal arts, literature, music, screen and visual arts. I have said for many years that our slice of New South Wales is home to extraordinary talent. Congratulations Jayden and good luck with your project. This really does show the breadth of talent and creativity on offer in the Dubbo electorate.
One of the Dubbo electorate’s greatest strengths is our sense of community and pride, this is displayed often through the work our many volunteers, remembering that local sport wouldn’t be possible without the mums, dads and other volunteers, and those who support emerging and existing talent. Keep up the great work.
Easy to do Business
NSW small businesses will benefit from the expansion of a highly successful NSW Government program that makes it easier to start cafes, restaurants and small bars. The Easy to do Business program, piloted in Parramatta, has succeeded in reducing the average time taken to start a business from 18 months to just three months.
The program is a joint initiative between Service NSW, the Offices of the NSW Small Business Commissioner, NSW Customer Service Commissioner and will remove barriers and obstacles for small business.
I’m pleased to announce that this small business initiative will soon be expanded to Dubbo.
