Cyntarrah Gallagher said she had no idea she was choosing such a popular name when she was choosing a name for her daughter last year.
“To me I never really heard of Olivia so I thought I was doing something different but it’s not really different now,” Miss Gallagher said.
“I was trying to get something easy for her because when I was young it was very difficult to learn [Cyntarrah].”
Miss Gallagher said she did not try to find out the gender of her baby and selected Oliver for a boy or Olivia for a girl.
Olivia May Gallagher arrived on May 27, 2016, and Miss Gallagher said since then she has come across other girls named Olivia, but no adults.
“I thought of a few names to begin with and I was due in June so I thought of something nice for June, I already had Olivia picked out and it suited her really well, she just looks like an Olivia," Miss Gallagher said.
“I found the name in a baby book, it was very hard to choose a name, I just kind of went with what I liked.
“I work at a preschool and we have an Olivia there too.”
When Joey and Naomi Currall were expecting their daughter Olivia Anne Currall this year, it was Mr Currall who suggested the name Olivia.
“Oliver is my middle name and I thought I’d give it a feminine spin,” Mr Currall said.
Since then the family discovered that his great grandmother also had Olivia and Anne in her name and although her first name was Gladys, everyone called her Olivia.
The name Anne was also Naomi’s grandmother’s name.
Jessica and Brad Apps named their son Oliver Robert Apps when he was born on January 12, 2016.
“I knew that it was popular though I picked it on the basis that we didn’t know any Oliver’s personally,” Mrs Apps said.
“We both decided to write a short list of five names each and Oliver was the only one that matched.
“I’m surprised it’s at the top but I’m not surprised it’s a popular name, it’s a classic name.”
She said they discovered Oliver’s gender at a reveal party a month before he was born.
Mrs Apps said when they cut into a cake and found the inside was blue there was some concern because they had girls names selected but had not settled on a boys’ name at that stage.
“I guess there’s so many pretty girls names and it just seemed like with every boys’ name we new someone with the name,” she said.
“We were very happy no one in our life was called Oliver and I really liked Ollie as a nickname as well.”
The final hurdle the name pass ed was the school yard test to make sure it didn’t rhyme with anything rude or couldn’t be shortened to anything rude.
The top baby names list was released by the NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Olivia was the most popular for the first time in 2014 but in 2015 came second to Charlotte before becoming most popular again in 2016.
However, it is the third year running that Oliver has been the most often selected name for boys.
The girls’ most popular names included Charlotte in second place followed by Amelia, Ava, Mia, Chloe, Emily, Grace, Isla and Ruby.
The boys’ top 10 included William as second most popular followed by Jack, Noah, Lucas, James, Ethan, Thomas, Alexander and Leo.
