A three-way countback was needed in section two to help determine a winner, with the team of Cody Ross and Jordan Thompson (two wins and plus-30) sneaking past Trangie Bowling Club’s Logan Fraser and Jarrod Kohlenberg by a single shot. West Dbubo Bowling Club’s James Robinson and Adam Ball were just two more shots behind with two wins and plus-27.
In the other sections, the powerhouse pairing of Tim Walsh (Nyngan Bowling Club) and Hayden Barrow (Dubbo City Bowling Club) breezed through to the semi-finals with three wins and plus-42, while West Dubbo Bowling Club’s Cooper McMullen and last girl standing Jessica Ball recorded three wins and plus-36.
“The juniors play very well. Their conduct on the green has been very good,” Club Dubbo bowls manager Anthony Brown said.
It was the section big day of action at Club Dubbo this week, after the opening rounds of the Zone 4 Junior Singles Championships on Monday.
The singles will kick off again on Wednesday with the quarter-finals, while the pairs will recommence with the semi-finals.
Then next week, most of the competitors will head to Molong to compete in the Fours Championship.
Brown said the juniors adjusted well to the different formats.
“Basically singles, you’re by yourself and pairs you have got to rely on your partner and good communication between partners. In fours you only have two bowls so it’s more of a skills game because you’re only got two chances,” he said.
About six new players had attended this year’s competition, which is held in Dubbo annually.
But Brown said it was not only the children who benefited.
“They get to meet new friends and new bowlers,” he said.
“A special thanks to … the West Dubbo men and women bowlers for marking the singles for the kids. They get a lot of enjoyment out of it as well.”
The final day of play will start at 8.30am with the quarter-finals of the singles: Leigh Brown (Molong) will take on Barrow; Tom Bowman (Coonabarabran) will play Jessica Ball (West Dubbo); Tom Rich (Mudgee) will play Ross; and Thompson will take on Tyrone Pennell (Rylstone). In the pairs semi-finals, Pennell and Brown will play Ross and Thompson, while Walsh and Barrow will take on McMullen and Ball.
