All funds from the gate takings and other events on the night will go towards the “house the Dubbo community built” for Warren Jarvis.
Mr Jarvis became the public face of those who lost everything during the fires after it was revealed not only was his house destroyed, but he also lost his treasured greyhounds and other animals.
A fundraising effort led by Rob Ingram led to almost everything needed for a replacement house being donated by Dubbo businesses and individuals.
The response from local businesses and tradespeople led to the project being dubbed the “house the Dubbo community built”.
However there have been some problems getting building approval, with the new home required to meet new standards for houses built in bushfire prone areas.
“We were hoping to have it all looked after and done sooner but the building approval has been tricky so we have got Barnsons to come on board and look after that,” Mr Ingram said.
“The changes mean we need to try and raise an additional $15,000 to get it all done.
“I had been trying to get a meeting here in Dubbo where we could make it a fundraiser for Warren and this meeting became available.
Buninyong Butchery has donated 15 meat trays which will be given away during the night with some given away during the first half of the meeting and the remainder drawn at the end of the meeting.
Jaycar Dubbo has agreed to sponsor a Calcutta on the main race with each of the dogs being auctioned off so whoever gets the winning dog will get about $500.
“The aim is just for us to get the project going as quickly as possible. I have tradespeople who have said they will be able to do their jobs as soon as they get the green light,” Mr Ingram said.
“Warren is doing it pretty tough at the moment and he is living in a caravan so it would be nice to be able to get him into a new house before it turns cold.”
The first race at Dawson Park is at 7pm on Saturday night and Mr Ingram said he hoped it would be a 10-race meeting.
