Last Monday I was in Mudgee to present Pat with the Dubbo Electorate Women of the Year Award.
Pat has been a volunteer community transport driver since 1994 and in the past has also worked in a volunteer capacity at the Mid-Western Host Family Respite Service.
I congratulate Pat on receiving her award and thank her and all volunteers in our community for their valuable service.
SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY
There is little more important than ensuring the safety of our children and the NSW Government has been upgrading school zone signs at 400 schools across the state, including schools in the Dubbo electorate.
This involves replacing the existing static signs with school zone signs with flashing lights.
The installation of flashing lights in school zones has led to improved driver awareness ensuring the safety of children and people coming and going from schools.
The latest recipients of these lights are St Mary’s Primary School in Dubbo, Mudgee Public School and Wellington Public School. These new signs will be installed, tested and operational before the end of April.
PROTECTING CONSUMERS
Consumers have been urged to report illegal “no refund” signs after a number of businesses across the state were found to be displaying them.
Fair Trading recently visited 550 businesses across NSW to see if they were displaying illegal signs, under the Australian Consumer Law, retailers are not permitted to display “no refund” signs in their shops.
This is because they imply that a refund is not possible even when a product is defective.
Consumers aren’t always entitled to refund – for example, if they have just changed their mind. However, they certainly do have the right to a refund if there is a problem with a product, and to suggest otherwise is illegal.
Consumers concerned about “no refund” signage should contact Fair Trading on 13 32 20.
MENTAL HEALTH INNOVATION FUND
The NSW Government has announced the opening of round two of the Mental Health innovation fund, this $1.5 million fund is available to organisations with ideas that can make a real difference.
The fund is designed to find new, local initiatives that improve mental health services and outcomes and provides an opportunity for the best minds in business, the community and government new ways to help people living with mental illness.
Expressions of interest for the second round are now open and are targeting areas such as mental health and intellectual disability/cognitive impairment, aboriginal mental health, youth homelessness, adult education and child and youth mental health.
Expressions of Interest for Round Two of the Innovation Fund close on 9 May 2017.

Member for Dubbo Troy Grant today announced the Old4New van will visit Lake Burrendong and Mudgee in April to share advice with the public about lifejackets and drowning prevention.
The mobile van will be at the following locations where you can exchange your old lifejacket for a new slimline lifejacket at a discounted price.
