Wesley House Players plans to transport the city back to a 1920s nightclub with an evening of snappy and sultry tunes and energetic performances.

The brainchild of director Raelene Burn, Makin’ Whoopee in the 20s will showcase local singers, dancers and musicians in a cabaret-style show of old favourites and hidden gems.

Encouraged by the sell-out success of previous Wesley House Players cabaret style shows, Raelene’s inspiration for Makin’ Whoopee in the 20s came from her love of ‘20s music.

“I was also inspired by the design and that night club feel in shows like Boardwalk Empire,” she said.  

“Doing a cabaret style show gives lots of local performers the opportunity to be part of the production.

“We have a great mix of performers including some ladies returning to the stage after break of a few years and some younger voices as well.

“Along with solo performances, we have a trio performing ‘Boswell Sisters’ style.”

As well as the singers, audiences will be entertained by musicians, including a string ragtime group, and a dance troupe from Stepping Out Dance Factory.

In keeping with the cabaret style, admission includes a wine or soft drink and light supper including some irresistible, 20s-themed sweets.

“We’re trying to create that authentic 1920s nightclub atmosphere so we invite audience members to dress up in twenties attire if they would like to,” Raelene said.

“It’s completely optional but we know some people love an excuse to dress up, so here’s your chance.”

The name of the show, Makin’ Whoopee in the 20s, was inspired by the popular song made famous by Michelle Pfeiffer in the movie The Fabulous Baker Boys, and a phrase from the 1920s meaning ‘to have fun’.

Makin’ Whoopee in the 20s is on for two nights only, March 24 and 25. Tickets are limited and are available from Indulge on Macquarie.
