Colts wrapped up a 148-run win over Newtown on Saturday and the minor premiers, who have only lost twice all season, now have a weekend off before playing in the 2016/17 decider.
“We knew we had won it (minor premiership) before the game had started so it was just about doing as many things right as we could and giving the batsmen a good bat and the bowlers a good bowl,” Buckley said.
The batsmen did the job on day one, Buckley leading the way with 147 as the men in red piled on 6/353.
Saturday was all about the bowlers and Buckley used a number of options on the way to dismissing Newtown for 2015.
But now we’ve really prepared (for the final) well and I feel like we’re back to our best.
- Greg Buckley
The Tigers, with little to play for, used the final game of the season as a chance to re-jig the order and give a number of people a chance with the bat but captain Mat Skinner was really the only one to fire, banging 53 late on.
“We had that heat game (that was cancelled) and a few guys were injured and then I was suspended so we went in with some guys having not played in about five weeks,” Buckley said.
“But now we’ve really prepared (for the final) well and I feel like we’re back to our best.
“I couldn’t be happier.”
The Tigers made a solid start to the mammoth run chase, Dan Holland (31) and Charlie Kempston (27) adding 58 for the first wicket before Tim Cox removed both.
Wayne Dunlop (16) was run out and when Steve Skinner fell for 34 the Tigers were in real trouble at 5/120.
Mat Skinner, batting at eight, swung the willow and finished his season with a half century but the match finished as a convincing victory for Colts.
Buckley capped off his man of the match effort with 3/69 while Cox (2/16), Ben Semmler (2/30) and Wes Giddings (2/44) also got among the wickets.
Mat had a whack and we knew he would with nothing to lose but everyone was happy with the way they bowled and I was happy,” Buckley said, before speaking about his own all-round performance.
“I’ve felt in good form all year, it’s just concentration with me, and last week I knew I needed a big score.”
Buckley stated his change will change very little in terms of build-up towards the grand final.
Training will be as normal this week but the Colts skipper confirmed his side will look to have a nets session on the turf at No. 1 Oval or a centre field practice to ensure his side remains fresh and in-form for the decider.
Buckley added it was a great feeling for him and everyone at the club to back in the biggest match of the season.
“It’s unbelievable. Especially with this year being an anniversary year,” he said, with his club celebrating 40 years. “There’s lots of old faces back around the club seeing how we’re doing so if we could win it, it would just top off a great year.”
