Dubbo has produced a comedian whose star continues to rise.
Rob Lloyd has been performing his improvised and family-friendly puppet show at the Adelaide Fringe Festival this week.
The Mighty Little Puppet Show was a sell-out at at the 2016 Melbourne Comedy Festival and Melbourne Fringe Festival.
The 38-year-old comedian has taken leave from his job as a drama teacher at a Melbourne college to focus on his comic career and perform at more overseas festivals.
The eldest son of Dubbo residents and retired schoolteachers, Elizabeth and Bob Lloyd, caught the acting bug in kindergarten at Dubbo West Infants.
“At the kindergarten Christmas play he was Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer and he came home at not even five and said ‘This is what I want to do for the rest of my life’,” Mrs Lloyd recalled on Friday.
The young Rob moved on to Orana Heights Public School and Dubbo South High School while being mentored by Dubbo Theatre Company stalwarts.
His move to Wagga Wagga to study at Charles Sturt University led him to join a comedy group that performed together for years.
You want your kids to be happy and doing what they love to do and he loves performing and he loves making people laugh.
- Elizabeth Lloyd, mother of comedian Rob Lloyd
Mr and Mrs Lloyd said after graduating from university, their son moved to Melbourne where he went solo.
“He started off in tiny, dingy venues in back streets,” Mr Lloyd said.
“Now he’s been doing it for so long and he’s well known and more popular, he gets bigger venues that hold more people.”
Mr and Mrs Lloyd say their “workaholic” son who “performs 24/7”, writes his own shows and loves to improvise.
“With The Mighty Little Puppet Show audience feedback determines the way the show goes,” Mrs Lloyd said.
“Every night is a completely different show.”
Children get to attach eyes and noses to the puppets, all named according to their colour and after Mrs Lloyd’s mother Rita. Blue Rita, Red Rita et cetera are a hit.
Mr and Mrs Lloyd call their son’s steady rise as a comedian “amazing”.
“You want your kids to be happy and doing what they love to do and he loves performing and he loves making people laugh,” Mrs Lloyd said.
