The man's neighbour phoned triple zero after hearing the 33-year-old yell for help outside his home on Somme Crescent in Milperra about 10pm on Wednesday.

It's understood the man had returned home that night, but could not turn on the lights in his house. When he went outside to check the fuse box, two men ambushed him and beat him with a hammer, before fleeing.

Police arrived to find the man bleeding heavily with head and leg injuries.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him at the scene before taking him to Bankstown Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers set up a crime scene at the house, which was examined by forensic officers overnight.

Police have appealed for help to identify two men who were seen fleeing the house, possible in a white Audi A3.

Police described the first man as being Pacific Islander in appearance, about 165 centimetres tall and bald. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and tracksuit pants.

The second man was described as being Pacific Islander in appearance, and aged about 35. He was last seen wearing a black shirt with tracksuit pants.
