“We are only taking food and water. Unfortunately we have to refuse clothes, toys, electricals...we have been inundated and have no room”, a sign at the entrance stated.

The team of volunteers manning the temporary storage unit at the Dunedoo Showground are in a state of organised chaos as they rush around the pavilion sorting through donations.

The abundance of food, clothing, household items and pet needs stacked along the wall and around the building is a reflection of the generosity people have shown in response to the fire earlier this month.

It’s all stored in the Bowar Pavilion, which is usually where the cake show and photo exhibitions are held.

Although extremely grateful for the amount of donations, the volunteers have asked the public to refrain from giving clothing and other material goods.

They said the focus is now on raising much-needed funds for victims of the fire on February 12.

Some food is being used to feed BlazeAid volunteers, other items are going to fire-hit people. Whatever is left over will be donated to local charity organisations. 

“Every one was appreciative,” Wendy Hill said. “People took what we had to offer and were very grateful for it when we left.”
