The victory was wrapped up last week when Souths rolled the Tigers for 79 and finished the day at 3/107 in reply.
On Saturday, Haling resumed on 28 not out and he continued on to top score with 70 as the Hornets piled on 7/208 (dec).
Chasing an outright win, the Hornets had plenty of time to bow the Tigers out again but the Hornets batsman dug in much better second time around and play was called with the side 2/83 after 34 overs.
Earlier, Haling had led the way as Souths set about building a total well out of reach of Newtown.
Jeff Shanks (31 not out) also chipped in while for the Tigers, Jaimal Sandhu and Kel Blackett each struck twice.
Newtown needed to avoid a batting collapse similar to that seen on day one but openers Peter Morrison and Chris Beatty (10) knuckled down, with a focus on survival rather than run scoring.
The Tigers were 1-16 after 10 and then five straight maidens in the middle stages paid off with Mick McCarthy running out Blackett for 15.
But Craig Pettit came in and banged his way to 30 not out, while Morrison was 16 not out when play ended.
Souths’ win, combined with CYMS’ loss to Rugby, saw the men in yellow leapfrog the Cougars all the way into second spot.
CYMS had started the round in second but fell out of the top three together after a 35-run loss to Rugby, who moved from last into the all-important third spot.
While the final margin of victory wasn’t that great, it was a fairly routine win for Rugby after piling on the runs on day one.
The Cougars lost a wicket early on day two, with Luke Ensor (3) falling inside four overs and the wickets continued to tumble after that.
Nick Karydis had 3/15 at one stage as CYMS slumped to 6/40 and it seemed the match was going to be over very quickly.
But the tail wagged massively, with Callan Braithwaite (23) chipping in before Thomas Saul and Brandon Dodd refused to give up without a fight.
Both made half centuries to give the Cougars a glimpse of a stunning win at one stage but the ask was too big, as the side ran out of overs.
Saul made 59 while Dood finished unbeaten on 50.
Incredibly, in a very rare sight in a cricket match, Rugby used 11 different bowlers.
Macquarie survived the final four overs of day one against Colts unscathed but the wickets tumbled on day two as the Blues fell to a heavy 149-run loss.
Colts, guaranteed top spot and a place in the decider, ran riot on Saturday with Jakke Gardiner particularly outstanding.
The spinner, who made a crucial 51 last week, claimed a brilliant 5/6 from five overs as the Blues were rolled for just 90.
Angus Norton (21) was the only batsman to make a score of note while Shane Groen (3/19) also impressed with the ball.
