This year the Relay for Life will be held October 28 and 29.
It’s the 11th Relay for Life held in Dubbo, and the goal is to raise $65,000.
Orana Relay for Life committee chair Jason Dearmer said the money raised from the relay went directly towards world-class research and was reinvested into Dubbo and the surrounding areas through cancer prevention, education and support programs.
Last year 615 people took part in Dubbo, and Mr Dearmer said he was hoping to get even more sign up for November.
“The more people involved with Orana Relay for Life the better as it creates a great community spirit and a way to have fun, as well as support NSW Cancer Council through fundraising efforts,” he said.
“Western Region NSW Cancer Council is 97% community funded to provide programs to the region and continue important research, so more money raised to assist in the programs and research the better.”
Mr Dearmer said there was an athletics theme for the relay, and the committee was looking at running a midnight five kilometre race, as well as a range of other fun activities.
The 2017 Orana Relay for Life website is up and running, enabling teams and individuals to start registering.
“A great thing to start doing once a team is registered is begin planning how your team is going to do fundraising leading up to the event. Some teams do it six months out, some do it a couple of weeks out. There are heaps of great fundraising ideas out there for businesses, family and friends to be part of,” Mr Dearmer said.
As well as event participants, there is also a call for members of the community to join the organising committee.
“The committee is the driving force behind the relay, and we want more community members to get involved to bring a fresh and fun way of thinking,” he said.
There are a range of committee roles available.
The Relay for Life remembers those who were lost, while supporting those going through cancer treatments.
