The family of Chris and Roz McArthur is seeking to bring them together through an appeal to the public for donations to buy a second-hand vehicle capable of transporting the wheelchair.
Its purchase would allow Mr McArthur, 63, to travel from his home to Dubbo’s Lourdes Hospital for regular rehabilitation sessions.
Currently a patient at Lourdes Hospital, Mr McArthur summons a taxi to take him to and from his home at weekends, at a cost of $100.
Waiting for him is his 67-year-old wife who in December was diagnosed with breast cancer which family report has “spread to her bones”. Roz McArthur is receiving radiotherapy as her devoted husband fights to get back on his feet.
Mr McArthur’s Grafton-based niece Georgina McArthur has revealed why her uncle is determined to walk again.
“Chris rang my Dad, very excited that he’d been in rehab and actually walked up and back on the bars,” Ms McArthur said. “He was saying to Dad that he wants to get better so he can help Roz and he did promise my Nan..that he’d walk through her door again.”
Ms McArthur said donations left at www.gofundme.com/hr6xhs-chriss-medical-fund could be a life changer for the couple who lived their dream of owning “small acreage” after moving from Sydney to Dubbo.
Mr McArthur was riding with mates in a bid to raise money for a charity when he failed to take a curve near Wellington last March.
“Chris broke his arms, legs, ribs, toes and fingers and suffered a stroke,” Ms McArthur said. She said after almost 12 months in hospitals in Orange and Dubbo he needed to be with his wife and able to visit extended family.
Ms McArthur said while her uncle battled for his life, his sister died, sister-in-law and wife were diagnosed with cancer and two great grandchildren were born.
The family is hoping to raise $15,000 to buy a vehicle and bring loving partners together again.
