The Hornets already have first innings points wrapped up and the temptation will now be to go for an outright win which would send the side rocketing up the ladder.
At Lady Cutler 2 on Saturday, Tom Mitchell was the star of the show.
He claimed 6/30 from 11.2 overs, opening the bowling and then finishing the innings with two wickets in two balls.
Peter Morrison (28) and Kel Blackett (14) were the only Newtown batsmen to make double figures in the paltry total.
In reply, Souths lost Brian McKinnon (1) early on when he was bowled by Craig Pettit (1/20) before Tristan Ward (27) and Matt Haling added 60 for the second wicket.
Kyle Wells hit a quick 26 to seal the points before falling to Jaimal Sandhu (2/21).
Haling remains unbeaten on 28 while Mick McCarthy is 5 not out. Souths will resume next week at 3/107.
Rugby fought to keep its season alive and finished day one on top against second-placed CYMS.
Rugby, sitting last and five points off the top three, produced a number of partnerships and contributions at Lady Cutler 3.
Lachlan Harper (64) and Mitch Russo (44) added 100 for the second wicket after the former and Gelnn Shepherd (18) put on 43 for the first wicket.
The Cougars fought back through the middle stages but then Strath Munro blasted a potentially crucial 59 late on in the day, hitting three fours and three sixes in his knock.
Max Rumble (36 not out) provided handy support as Rugby finished the day at 8/270.
Daryl Thompson was the most effective CYMS bowler, taking 4/82 while Callan Braithwaite took 2/23 from 10.
CYMS is currently second but with South Dubbo and Rugby is good positions the pressure will be on the Cougars next week.
RSL-Colts fought back to end day one on top against a Andy Blake-inspired Macquarie at Lady Cutler 4.
The competition leaders were reduced to 5/49 in the 15th over against the Blues, with Blake starring with the ball, but the middle and lower order fired, boosting Colts to a total of 239.
Macquarie survived the final four overs of the day unscathed and will resume the chase next week at 0/3.
Early on in the match, Blake struck four times in his first eight overs to have Colts reeling.
Blake went on to finish with the impressive figures of 6/52 from 13.5 overs but not even he could end the stubborn resistance from Aaron Morris (64), Jakke Gardiner (51), Shane Groen (38) and Rhys Beauchamp (30).
Morris hit nine boundaries and a six in his vital knock.
Angus Norton and Sam Henry then had to face a tricky four overs late in the day but they managed to survive.
The pair will resume the imposing chase next week with Henry 3 not out and Norton yet to score.
