It wasn’t easy going for Newtown against South Dubbo at No. 2 Oval and it was far from the biggest total scored this season but the Tigers toughed it out on Saturday.
Newtown posted 201 against the Hornets, with the final wicket falling in the last over of the day.
The Hornets bowlers never allowed Newtown to get away, with a dropped one of only few negatives.
That missed chance came off the bat of Mat Skinner early on in his innings, and he went on to top score with a patient and determined 62.
The next best score was 29 not out from number 10 Dale O’Donnell, who combined with number 11 Troy Tracey (27) in a vital 59-run partnership for the final wicket.
It had earlier seemed Newtown wouldn’t make 150, with only three of the top seven making double figures.
Will Lindsay was a standout with the ball, taking 3/33 from 16 overs, whiole Justin Knudsen alo impressed in his effort of 3/42 from 17 overs.
Lindsay’s new ball partner Henry Railz chimed in with 2/33 from 12 while Joe Coles got through plenty of work, finishing with 1/63 from 21 overs.
Skinner was shining light for Newtown, coming in after Lindsay had removed openers Charlie Kempston (9) and Dan Holland (13) but it wasn’t easy he faced 151 balls in his knock.
When he departed with the score 9/142 it seemed a matter of time until Souths would be batting but O’Donnell and Tracey made the most of their time in the middle.
They saw the Tigers through to the final over, helping the side past 200 and forming a competitive total.
A win for the Tigers next weekend would keep the side’s finals hopes well and truly alive while if Souths, who will be without Will Lindsay, was to reach the target it would go a long way to sealing second spot.
