The scenario of the day involved a mock cave collapse and the rescue of trapped people from the well-known Cathedral Cave at the attraction.
Designed as a training exercise for emergency responders, it started about 9.50am on Saturday and involved a significant number of emergency responders from the local area, with local school children and others that volunteered to be injured trapped patients.
The exercise finished about midday and was described by Senior Sergeant Gibson from Wellington Police as a very successful event proving to be a great learning tool for all responders involved.
Senior Sergeant Gibson says that exercises such as these enhance the capability of police and other emergency responders to provide a coordinated and professional response to disasters and matters of public emergencies.
“We are now going to review all the actions of the exercise and look at what we did, and how we might do it better,” Senior Sergeant Gibson said.
Wellington Police Station, Fire & Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance Service, the State Emergency Service, Wellington Caves and Dubbo Regional Council all had representatives involved.
