The band emerged as part of the 1960s MerseyBeat scene along with The Beatles and The Hollies and broke into the US charts with Needles and Pins.
What followed was steady stream of hits, including When You Walk In the Room, Love Potion Number 9 and a cover of The Orion’s Don’t Throw Your Love Away.
More than 50 years later, they’re still going – touring theatres, RSL and leagues clubs, including six weeks each year in Australia – and they don’t plan to stop any time soon.
“I think what has kept us going is the love of what we do,” frontman Frank Allen said.
“We're at a stage now where we could exist very, very comfortably for the rest of our lives without earning anymore money but what we're doing ... how many people go to work and get applauded every three minutes?”
The Searchers’ sound has influenced the likes of The Byrds, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.
They’ve toured with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and now they’re heading to Dubbo.
Allen said audiences can expect a mix of hits and lesser-known tracks, with plenty of anecdotes thrown in from the groups’ half-century on the road.
He said the band doesn’t shy away from being a “nostalgia act”, and they’re “proud of the history that we’ve had the influence that we’ve had on other people”.
“I think if you're fan of The Searchers then you'll get everything you expect and more,” he said.
“There's an interval by the way to give you a bit of a breather but there's not just music … there's a whole history of stories that come between the hits. We do the hits but we do the B-sides as well.
“If you haven't been to a Searchers concert before, get along and I think you'll be hooked for whatever remains of our career – and I think there's a few more years in us yet!”
The Searchers play the Dubbo Regional Theatre on Tuesday, February 28.
