Newbold came to the crease with his side in real trouble at 7-102 against South Dubbo Green at Lady Cutler South 1 but he incredibly and single-handedly smashed his side to an imposing total of 246.
He belted 12 fours and six sixes in his knock of 102 with the next best score Darren Davies’ 34. Saad Khan was the best bowler with 3/25 from eight overs.
Brett Warren (44) begin the run chase in quick fashion before John Byrne (57) and Shef Malik (44) built a key middle order partnership. Joel Johnston then made a vitally important 50 before being run out, but the damage had been done and Souths hung on to win by just one wicket in the final over.
Irfan Sagri had a similar day to Newbold, producing a stunning performance for RSL-Colts White only to see his side lose to a Matt Naden-inspired Rugby Blue by five wickets.
Sagri was one of his side’s only players to show fight with the bat, making 40 of RSL-Colts White total of just 90.
Naden (4/28) and Sam Jeffries (3/9) starred with the ball for Rugby Blue, who then reached the total in quick time, despite Sagri’s fantastic spell.
He claimed 5/38 but Naden smashed 42 to help his side claim victory.
Rugby Red moved into the second spot on the ladder courtesy of a tight five run win over RSL-Colts Red.
A 57-run opening partnership between Dale Smith (28) and Josh Connolly (23) was key for Rugby Red, who also had Mitchell Rosenbaum (26) contribute in the total of 164. Blayne McGhee (4/10) and Ben Bruce (4/39) did all the damage for Colts with the ball.
All of the Rugby Red bowlers then did a job with the ball to help constrict Colts Red. Glenn Armstrong (40) and Hargit Singh (38 not out) did their best in the chase but the likes of Craig Rosenbaum (2/23), Brett Paul (2/28) and Mitch Rosenbaum (2/37) helped knock over Colts for 159.
Macquarie White is on the verge of breaking into the top five after defeating CYMS Green by a convincing 111 at John McGrath 1.
Tom Peacocke starred with 86 at the top of the order for Macquarie White while captain Justin Gavin (55) again got among the runs in an imposing total of 6/226.
Mat Sharp (2/29) was the only wicket-taker for CYMS Green, who struggled in the run chase, with Ben Calder helping reduce them to 4/27.
They never recovered from there, all out for 115. Sharp was also the top-scorer, making 21, while Calder was the standout, taking 4/16 from eight, while Josh O’Malley took 2/5 from three.
Newtown Gold scored a routine win over South Dubbo Gold on Saturday, saluting by 48 runs.
Chris Lenord banged 53 for the Tigers while Kain Simpson (38) also chipped in with 38 while Keiran Moore (4/25) was by far the best with the ball.
In reply, Souths made a solid start through the likes of Scott Russell (27) and Greg Taylor (27) but then Ty Webb (3/37) and Erik Woolnough (2/17) worked their way through the middle and lower order as Souths were dismissed for 151.
Ben Williams got among the runs again as competition leaders CYMS Green continued on their winning way with a seven wicket victory over Macquarie Blue.
Macquarie posted 6/165 from its 40 overs, with Josh Fleming’s 46 the best effort with the bat while the wickets were shared.
Marty Nelson was finally knocked over cheaply, removed by Fleming for 0, but Williams (80 not out) and Gilbert Chaseling (46) led the Cougars to another strong victory.
