The cards, which launched on December 12, work through EFTPOS and allow shoppers to spend the money at registered stores.
Such is the flexibility of the card, it can be used to purchase everything from a morning coffee, to clothing and a holiday.
myDubbo is an initiative of Dubbo Regional Council’s Ignite program, in association with local businesses and the Dubbo Business Chamber.
The cards can be purchased from We Know Travel and Snares Newsagency.
We Know Travel business manager Matt Stonestreet said they have been amazed by the demand for the cards.
“There have been a lot of people coming in and buying them as presents. There have also been businesses who have bought them in bulk lots,” he said.
“We sold out of our first lot and had to get more in so it caught us by surprise just how popular they have been.
“It melted the EFTPOS machine one day. We had one person who was just putting through those payments. It’s been a lot better received than we even thought it would be.
Dubbo Business Chamber president Matt Wright said more retailers were always coming on board and adding to the choice.
“I think the timing of the launch just prior to Christmas was fantastic. We know that local people like to support Dubbo businesses and this is a really convenient way for them to do it,” he said.
“Talking to Nicola Chandler [DRC’s Ignite co-ordinator], there are even more businesses looking to come on board.”
Mr Stonestreet said part of the demand was because of the flexibility the cards offer.
“Most gift cards you buy them and they are only good for one store, whereas these you have a wide variety of participating retailers,” he said.
“How many cards could you buy a coffee, get your hair done and then get new tyres fitted?
“And you are supporting local retailers while doing it so everyone wins.”
