The hard-fought victory meant Western finished the premier under-16 competition with three wins and just the one loss.
It wasn’t enough to see them claim the title though, as Riverina claimed the Cup courtesy of having a better net run rate than the also-undefeated Newcastle.
For Western on Thursday, Henry Railz capped off a strong Cup campaign by top-scoring with 78 in his side’s total of 245.
South Dubbo Hornet Railz came in at a precarious time with his side 2-22 in the seventh over but after a steady partnership with Campbell Rose (22), he and captain Thomas Nelson began to turn the match in Western’s favour. It was tough going early but the runs soon started to tick over and the pair went on to add 103 for the fourth wicket.
Railz departed after his fine knock and Nelson fell after that for 53 before some late hitting from RSL-Colts’ Tom Atlee (33) helped Western post 245.
With the ball, Western showed great control after Southern/ACT got off to a flying start.
The score was 0/96 after 19 overs but Brock Larance’s spell changed the match. The CYMS gun claimed two wickets within eight balls and finished with a tremendous 2/16 from 10 overs.
Railz backed up his effort with the bat by taking 1/43 from 10 while Atlee, Nic Broes and Harry Pearce also took one wicket each as Southern/ACT was kept to 7/230 from its 50 overs.
