Around 4pm, winds of up to 130km per hour were recorded with flash rain mainly centered around the Mudgee township.
The storm only lasted for around five minutes, but the destruction was intense.
A video shot by the Mudgee Guardian showed the brute force of the deluge - a full size tree was completely uprooted and slammed into a white van parked on Perry Street, outside the daycare centre.
The destruction continued across town with the chimneys on the Cob and Co building smashing into the pavement below on the corner of Perry and Market Streets.
Luckily no-one was injured in the shower of bricks and debris.
Owner of JP Thai Massage (within the Cob and Co building), Penny Samantha said it was so quick. It was like a mini tornado.
“It was unbelievable. I’ve never seen anything like this before. I watched the bricks falling down and I didn’t know what to do,” she said.
The destruction continued, with massive historic trees in Lawson Park ripped from the ground.
St Paul’s Church suffered damage to the roof, with tiles ripped from the building – smashing into the street below. More than 8000 residents and businesses suffered a major blackout as Essential Energy crews worked to try and recover services including the main Telstra exchange - there was a service blackout for around two hours.
